My Trail Review:
We parked on the Senator Highway Trailhead side, (no fee parking when we hiked), crossed the highway and started into the trail. Teddy and I hit the trail early today expecting the four mile hike back to the car might be in the hot sun. Bring plenty of water as this trail is a long one and a round trip may take you 5 to 6 hours. The trail is well put down and the mix easy to walk on. I consider this a moderate trail rather than easy as it is about 8 miles roundtrip and it meanders up and down the ravines and hills so you get a pretty good workout along the way.
There was plenty of tall Ponderoza Pine tree shade going in and coming back out. There were a couple short sections with Juniper Pines where you will feel more sun. You can see Goldwater Lake, Thumb Butte and Granite Mountain through the trees. We saw a few gray squirrels today several very courteous and friendly bikers, a couple runners and a couple family groups out with their friendly dogs. We took some time to snack and cool down in the shade at the Bannon Creek Pond.
Coming across and then down from the ridge into the White Spar Campground we saw some great views to the west and northwest along with sections of the town of Prescott. There are facilities at the Campground Trailhead area and it looked like free parking there too.
All in all a great day, blue skies, sunny and spring like temps. Really enjoyed this Ponderoza Pine trail and it is even close to town. This trail is part of the developing Prescott Circle Trail system and connects up to TR 299 on the Senator Highway Trailhead side.
Enjoy the Hike!
Max and Teddy
