My Trail Review:

This trail is part of a three trail loop. I started out early having decided to make it the first part of the loop (up the mountain) as it is the most difficult and the most exposed to the sun. It was already quite hot by the time we reached the summit today so it turned out to be a good decision.  Shortly after ascending on TR 28 we came to the interconnect for TR 111, it was well marked and went to our right, which took us over to FR 105 and then another right and down a short distance to the interconnect for  TR 533 where we turned right again and went back down the mountain to the same trail head we started out on. This is a real sweet set up and offers some great northern Arizona diversity of landscape and trail mix.

After finding the 89A Trail Head and seeing that we needed to enter TR 28 going to the left (east) we followed it along the wash (and road) in Yeager Canyon for about 3/4 of a mile. We came to an old concrete bridge that is no longer used or accessed from the highway (may date back to the 1930's I would guess as this used to be a favorite get away camping area in that era) then the trail soon turned to the right and started up the mountain.

It was a steady steep climb up through switchbacks and scenic vistas of the west slope with good views of Mingus Mountain, the Lonesome Valley, the Prescott Valley area, and the Bradshaw Mountains along the way.  About 2/3 the way up Teddy stopped, pointed towards the higher northwest brush area and let out a really strong and low predator alarm sound - I've seldom if never heard any of my collies over the years sound off like this so I took it as instinctive and for real - I didn't see anything and in a minute or so Tedster calmed down, so I fiqured his presence and reaction had been enough for what ever it was to lose interest in us and clear out of the area.

We didn't see anyone on this part of the 3 trail loop today. The trail mix is a bit steep and slippery in a few spots with medium sized stones that can give way under your feet so be sure to pay attention to your footing along the way. Found the trail very enjoyable, a good workout, in rather good condition and very easy to follow.

Loved this 3 trail looper that I hiked in this order ...

MAP AND DIRECTION TIPS
West Trail Head
: Coming from the Prescott area the west trail head for TR 28 (and TR 533) is located off Highway 89A at a point about 1.5 miles east of the twin power transmission lines crossing the highway just inside the western Prescott National Forest boundary. Keep an eye on the right side of the road and you will see a small pull off parallel parking area alongside the road. When you look back into the wash area behind this pull off you will see a sign, entrance gate and small cattle crossing bridge marking the trail heads.

East Trail Head: Traveling either east from Prescott or west from Jerome on Highway 89A, at the summit north of Mingus Mountain, take Forest Road 104 south form approximately 1.3 miles to where it intersects with Forest Road 413. Take Forest Road 413 west for 0.8 miles to the trailhead near the fenced wildlife watering device.
