Regional area of North Mingus Mountain Trail TR 547: in the Mingus Mountain Recreationa Area of the Prescott National Forest, near Jerome, Cottonwood, Yavapai County, Arizona.
My trail rating: 2.5
My Trail Review:
This trail runs from the Hwy 89A / FRS 338 / TR 547 Trailhead Parking area to TR 548 interconnect. You can see the Forest Service Web Sites pdf map for a detailed map of the trails of this Mingus Mountain Forest Service area.
The trail is well shaded in tall Ponderosa forest pine trees. There is a pine needle - cone soft trail mix with sections of the trail being wide and others very narrow in spots. The trail is easy to follow with occasional stone markers set up to keep you on the right path.
These type trails are among my favorites due to the forest views, trees and woodsy feel and smells. It basically follows the ravine up the side of the mountain while criss crossing several dry ravine creek beds. There's lots of dead wood and forest cover, interesting rock out crop formations and lichen variations on trees, rocks, stumps and more. I didn't see any critters on the trail today (might have briefly heard a rattler off the trail in the brush as we moved through warn us) but we did run across a band of bird watchers on the way out not far from the trail head. It was a cool summer morning with a sweet dampness in the air as we entered the tall Ponderosa pine tree coverage. The flys were biting in the lower section a little today but all in all a great high country Arizona short hiking experience.
You can use this trail as part of a loop by taking Trail 548 back north, around the peak and back down to FSR 338, where a short walk will take you back to the Trail Head Parking area. You could also work up several other variations using the "keewee" or "park'n'hop" alternates too. Today I took it up to the TR 548 and then back out the way I went up.
Enjoy the Hike!
