My Trail Review:

July 2009

We parked in the 307 Trailhead parking area which is right across from the TR 383 Trail entrance (on the east side of Senator Hwy). After parking, we walked across the highway (west), then into the Groom Creek Horse Camp access entrance road and looked immediately to our left where we found the entrance to TR 383. This is a full loop trail so we ended up right back where we started just on the other side of the entrance road.

This is a heavily used horse trail as the campground it was built for is a persons with horses only camping area. The trail is well maintained and mostly on flat land. It is well rutted from the heavy horse traffic. We saw a couple groups of riders and one professional loner today and all were courteous and friendly.

We started out around 9 am with a beautiful blue sky July summer day. It started out very comfortable with cool shaded areas then grew hot as we ended in the near noon sun. There was plenty of shade on this trail with lots of places to stop and enjoy the views. It will make a very good easy to moderate short day hike that does not require any steep climbing or difficult trail mix.

It's not far from Prescott and civilization and you are always near the campground as you loop around the outside of it. The trail was rather easy to follow with lots of signs to let us know what trail we were on and which way we should go. Because of the campground and heavy traffic there are many little cross over spur trails but you can just ignore those and stay on the wider more obvious horse trail and you will do fine.

Beautiful day and pleasant short hike.

Enjoy the hike!
