Regional area of Salida Gulch Trail : in the Prescott National Forest, Lynx Lake Recreational Area, near Prescott, Prescott Valley, Chino Valley, Yavapai County, Arizona.

DIRECTIONS

Take highway 69 to Walker Road (County Road 57). Turn south on Walker Road for about 1.5 miles, to 9401T . Turn left onto this gravel access road, just after you see the sign (see photo gallery) to the Lynx Creek Ruin Trail TR 301 and Salida Gulch trailhead parking areas. Follow the gravel road all the way to the end where you will find ample parking.

You will know you are at the end when you see a gated blacktop entrance that leads into a residential area. It is about 1.5 miles back on a rough rocky but accesible forest access type gravel road. Use caution, drive slowly and watch for other vehicles, animals and persons on the winding road. There was not any fee boxes at the Trailhead so seeing a Gila County Sheriff passing through I asked him about it and he said this was not a fee parking area. It is right next to a residential area and you may see motorized vehicles entering and leaving here.

April 2008

I reached the trailhead about high noon today and went up to the top on a looper on Schreck Tank Trail (as I call it) TR 9263. I found the connection to Salida Gulch Trail TR93 about 1.5 miles into TR9263. It is well marked and you would turn left to continue on TR9263 so go straight ahead and onto Salida Gulch Trail TR93.

It starts out here on higher and flat ground then quickly begins a descent to the gulch - creek bed - floor. Use caution on the downward hike as I found the trail mix is heavier rock and stone and can move around under your footing. I almost took a nasty fall and it reminded me that is just how fast things can happen out on a trail. A twisted ankle or worse and the day could become miserable but I guess with years of roller skating with my kids behind me somehow I danced and lurched all over the trail - feet in the air a few times and lots of flailing around and I didn't go down. Silver was wondering what I thought I was doing and was trying to keep up with me on the leash but all in all nothing painful occurred.

Once I reached the bottom the trail went to the right and followed the creek bed, often criss crossing it when one side became too narrow. This part of the trail is mostly flat and narrow.

In several places water comes up or out and appears in the creek bed where it goes over black granite or drops off a little trickle water fall to a lower level. It was typical to see greener life around these open water areas and makes one wonder just how much water is traveling deep underground.

The trail is well marked, narrow, goes under and around tall pines and other trees with trail limbs and plenty of shade along the way. I found the trail enjoyable and a bit of an ecological adventure.

I combined this trail, Salida Gulch Trail TR93, today with TR9263 on a perfect "looper" and so ended up right back where I had begun at the Trailhead and parking area.

Enjoy the Hike!
