DIRECTIONS

January 2007

I found the trail gate to the west of the small parking area. The first thing I noticed as I went through the gate and up the trail is the extreme burned out area with many tall fire blackened stripped pines still standing. It felt like I was walking through a movie set or a bombed out war forest. The woodpeckers were here today too working these trees over pretty good. The trail climbs steadily 700 feet upward for about the first 1.5 miles then on to the Smith Ravine spring. I found the trail worth the hike just to walk through this area. It narrowed and switchbacks in this section and ofteb follows the fence line. The pine trees were green and full. I continued upward into a grassy meadow hillside area with pinion pines, cactus vegetation and even a frozen creek bed due the cold lately. The trail ended at Forest Road 52a where I could see the lookout tower to the south.

Enjoy the Hike!
