January 2007

The trailhead leaves from the TR 299 trailhead and climbs briskly for a little over a half of a mile on an open scrub oak covered hillside. There is little shade here and the trail looks and feels more like a jeep trail to me. At the top of this area I went through an open gated area and could see the Deer Lick Spring on my right and then I entered a Ponderosa Pine and Oak forest section for about half a mile that was truly enjoyable. In here the trail was softer with allot of pine needles then I met up with with Seven-Mile Gulch Trail connection. From here the trail turned south for about two miles, climbing briskly again through a Ponderosa forest to Spruce Ridge. There is a meadow like hillside valley with juniper trees and an almost "Italian" picture perfect feel to it. I want to come back to this spot someday and just sit down for an hour or two and enjoy the view and feel of this vista. I crossed under the high wires a few times and then down the hillside to where this trail ends on Forest Road 52A. This trail offers a diverse vegetation and trail mix that I found exceptional.

Enjoy the Hike!
