Teddy is one of the most athletic full size collies I have ever known. When he was just about a year old and we first started hiking together, I thought I would gently teach him "the ropes" about day hiking. Well, he ended up teaching me. These dogs are so smart they can become a real study in how not to waste any effort in movement or sacrifice comfort along the trail.
One of the first little 3 to 4 foot deep by 4 to 5 foot wide ravines we came to I headed down into it with him on the leash behind me. He stopped, looked at it, looked down at me with that "what are you doing silly" look in his eyes. I called him in and gave a slight tug on the lease, he moved back slightly and standing still with one cat like release jumped across it like it was something he had been doing for the last 40 years. Then he looked back as if to say "hey, what's taking you so long - that was fun - come on lets go!"
Teddy is a big dog and likes to drink a lot of water on the trail so I bring extra for him just in case he needs or wants it. He seldom wants to eat when we hike and prefers to get home, water down and rest then he will eat later. He prefers to eat his grain late at night when everyone else is asleep and shares his food anytime with Silver like it was the most natural thing for him to do. Again he is a real study in a critter that intuititively just seems to know his own body and comfort zones very well. He is a happy warm spirited dog that adds a lot of positive energy to any moment he is in with you.
Teddy even came along at just the right time, as Silver had been deciding that as much as he loved going with me he was really getting too old for it and not able to enjoy the time out like he used too. His hips would get sore and stiff and it would take him a day or two to fully recover so it was time to let him retire from the trail. We talked about it and after a couple trial hikes with Teddy and then letting him stay home if he wanted too - he decided on his own that he would be happy not going along and now he looks forward to the "home boy" treats he gets when Teddy and I head out and of course the dog happy re-union and trail smells when we get back.
