My Trail Review:
Fall 2006
I found and hiked a section of this trail from the Pine Trailhead on the Tonto National Forest side. The Pine Canyon Trail is a long one and not for those out of shape or inexperienced in Arizona trail hiking. It is 8 miles one way which means that unless you make it a "keewee" or a "park 'n hop" (see link to alternative hikes below) you will be doing 16 miles roundtrip with a 2200 foot elevation climb so you could get into some trouble if you are not well prepared for that type of hike. The trail can also be entered from the Coconino National Forest side at the Cinch Nook Trailhead side on FR 6038 which is where you would want to have an alternate return vehicle parked if you are doing a one way.
I took a section of the trail up to just past Dripping Springs where I found the Good Enough Trail and then looped a return back to the Pine Trailhead. I will be back at another time and setup to do the whole length of the trail. The area I hiked in is a mixture of high desert and classic Arizona rim country Ponderosa pine forest wonderful. Excellent vistas, pine needle soft sections of trail mix, plenty of shade, some very light running spring water creeks flowing down over sections of the narrow trail.
Enjoy the Rim!
