My Trail Review:

Late Fall  2006
I parked at the Geronimo Traihead and moved up through the short connecting trails to where I found the West Webber Trail intersect and then began up and into the gradual  forest ravine inclines. It was a wonderful day and the maple trees are so full and covering that I found the trail was mostly shaded and quiet. I ran into some tree squirrels who seemed to take a big interest in me as if I was something quite peculiar to their normal world. Two of them came out to watch me as I walked through their area and were eating some kind of wild nuts. It reminded me how we humans eat popcorn at the movie while all the time keeping our eyes on the screen. It was cute.

Once I got deeper into this trail I found quite a few switchbacks and fallen trees covering parts of the trail. I found it difficult to determine where the trail continued to the top of the Rim somewhere into the middle of the hike. Somehow I got on a spur trail which was well traveled but took me up and into a dead end rocky ravine. There was a clear path up into that area but no where else to go once I reached the top of it. I circled and switched back a few times trying to pick up the correct trail but could not find it in this area.

I switched to the west side of the ravine, went up a few hundred yards and  found a trail, but there no markings or signs to determine it I was back onto the West Webber. I had gotten off to a late start today and could begin to see that the sun was going to be going down over the top side of the Rim soon, so if I continued on up to the top of the on this one I would be coming back in the dark. This trail was lacked good markings and seemed risky for that so I elected to start back down.

I picked followed the trail I was on southwest and then picked up another more clearly marked with tags on the trees and that trail  took me back down to the Milk Ranch Point West Trail interconnect. I labeled that one a Hoonoo - cause who knew!  I then took that down to the Geronimo Trail trail and that took me back to the Geronimo Trailhead and the parking area.

Sections of this trail with the maple trees and lush growth were very enjoyable.

Enjoy the Rim!

MAP AND DIRECTION TIPS
Take the very scenic two lane Highway 87 north out of Payson to the Control Road FS 64 which will be on your right (east) side of the road shortly after you pass the entrance to the Tonto Natural Bridge. Take this gravel road approximately 5 to 6 miles, across a small bridge and then make a sharp left at FS 440. Take FS440 about 2 miles to the Geronimo Trailhead where you will find a small pulloff area to park one or two vehicles on your right .
