What to bring on a day hike.

Basic Essentials
All these can fit nicely in a small back pack or a fanny pack and your hiking pants pockets. They need not be expensive and can be found in most discount sporting goods stores.

1. WATER
--- minimum 2 qts per person (on hot days or longer hikes bring 3-4 qts per person minimum)

2. HIGH ENERGY FOOD LUNCH/SNACK
--- for your lunch or trail break - high energy food bars, nuts, raisins, fruit, dryed fruit, etc
--- small plastic sealable bag to pack out your leftover food and paper scaps in

2. SAFETY/EMERGENCY ITEMS
--- rain poncho
--- whistle - warning and rescue tool - three bursts are the universal signal for distress and two for I am coming to help.
--- flashlight - multipurpose emergency type with power crank and battery modes.
--- space blanket - multipupose uses for both heat retention and rescue signaling.
--- reflective signal mirror or a flashing emergency light
--- extra batteries (one size that fits all devices is best)
--- cell phone but be aware you may be in areas with no tower coverage

3. PERSONALS
--- toilet paper and small plastic sealable bag to pack it out in
--- sun block and insect repellant as needed
--- head covering - wide brimmed hat, bandana, etc is extremely important in all weather

4. FIRST AID KIT- including
--- a snake bite kit
--- duct tape (wrap it around a pen cap or credit card)
--- pocket knife - fold out compact foldout hunting type with good quality sawing type blade.

5. NAVIGATION
--- small quality compass
--- trail area map - both topographical and interpretive maps are recommended
--- GPS unit is helpful but only as an adjunct to compass and map

6. FOOTWEAR
--- a good fitting (broken in) comfortable pair of hiking boots or shoes with a hiking tread pattern

7. PROPER CLOTHING
--- layered and based on the weather you will be hiking in

NOTE: be prepared for sun, heat, cold, wet and wind.

The above items are suggested for a basic local day hike on a well maintained trail and are a good start - however based on the area you are hiking, trail condition, length of the trail, the weather, number of persons, special needs and other important issues you may need additional items.
